- I attended QEHS and the old Seven Islands Intermediate School from grades 4-11, between '57 and '65. After graduating, I went to McGill and studied Geology, then worked all over northern Canada as a mining geologist until '73 when I married and moved to Edmonton to do my MSc in geology. The mining industry was in a downturn when I graduated, so I took a job with Petro Canada in Calgary, and was involved in the drilling of the Hibernia discovery wells, as well as many of the other fields on the Grand Banks. I left Petro Canada for a short stint at Dome Petroleum, which folded up around my ears, so went back to Petro Canada and continued with exploration of the offshore Scotian Shelf and its gas fields. In 1987 I was seconded to a crown corporation, Petro-Canada International Assistance Corp. After a 3 month assignment in Morocco, working with the national oil company there, I was sent to Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Montreal where I did a management diploma in French. This was followed by 4 years managing oil and gas related foreign aid projects in Morocco, Senegal, Gambia, Madagascar and the Phillipines, and a year spent on a Russia project. Along with most of Petro-Canada's geologists and geophysicists, I was laid off in the last great oil and gas downturn in '92. Although I was bitter at the time, in many ways it was the best thing that could have happened, as I made a career change that has worked out extremely well. I have been a realtor with RE/MAX in Calgary for the last 17 years, a career that I enjoy immensely.
- I will be 61 this year, but have no immediate plans to retire - don't know what I'd do. I am remarried to a wonderful lady who I met after my first marriage broke up in '93, and I have two wonderful children, a daughter of 26 and a son of 29. I have wonderful memories of so many of those who were at QEHS during my years there, both students and teachers, but I've lost touch with all of them as I've not lived in Quebec since '73. I wonder whatever became of Dr. Tiszai, and Mr. Oswald Downs. I'd be delighted to hear from any of you. You can always find me by my website, MalcolmMawer.com
