Retired Montreal Fire Stations


Fire Station No. 1 - 335 Place Youville, Vieux (Old) Montréal. - This building, built 1903-04, was the second station no. 1 of the Montreal Fire Department (the original being on Craig St. (now St. Antoine) at Chenneville.) It served as a fire station until 1972. The building was restored in the early 1980's and now is a museum, Le Centre d'Histoire de Montréal (The Montreal History Centre.)



Fire Station No. 2 444 rue St Gabriel, Vieux (Old) Montreal - This is the oldest surviving building that once was a fire station of the Montreal Fire Department. Many of the decorative elements of the original building were removed during renovations. Built 1871-72 this structure was used as a fire station until 1939. It now houses the Centre de Céramique Bonsecours (an arts workshop and gallery). Station 2 was listed in a later Lovell's Directory (1952) as operating out of station 20 (along with station 20) at 181 Craig St West (now rue St Antoine).


Station No.7 - 1217 rue Notre Dame est Montreal - This building was the third building to house Station No. 7. It was built in 1898 and was in operation until early 1984? Until recently it housed some offices of the world famous Cirque du Soliel.


Old Station No 15

Station No. 15 - 1050 Hibernia - Built 1891-92 to replace an existing fire station in the St. Gabriel district (a town annexed to Montreal 1887.) The building was used as fire station until 1973. The building underwent restoration and became a municipal library. Today the building serves as home for the St. Charles branch of the city library and a senior citizens club. Station 15 still exists, operating from what used to be Station No. 9 at 1690 Richardson corner Richmond.


Station No 21

Station No. 21 - 1200 Mill Street - Built in 1912-13 station 21 was in operation from 01 May 1913 to 16 April 1972. This building replaced temporary quarters used from 1904 to 1913. Station 21's role was to provide better protection to the western habour area and nearby industries. It now provides a home to a glass workshop.
