Kamperman, Barend
- Born September 30, 1950 in Holland. Family moved to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1957. Graduated with BA in '74 from the University of King's College, Halifax, NS. BEd in '75 from Dalhousie University, Halifax NS. I moved to Sept-Iles, PQ in 1977 to teach Grade 9 English at QEHS on Pere Divet. Had to quit at end of '78 -'79 year due to Seasonal Affected Disorder caused by lack of sunshine/vitamin D.
- I had differnt jobs afterwards back in NS; but, not great ones. My kid brother offered to pay for my moving to Japan. The first time I declined. (It was just too big a change.) The second time I accepted his loan for a return ticket to Osaka, Japan. He was already teaching English Conversation there and making pots of money. I landed with about $100 in my pocket. I ended up teaching there for almost 10 years. It was not always easy but the sun shone. I ended up traveling to NYC a number of times, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vancouver, BC. Of course I kept going home for family reunions and/or christmas. I enjoyed Thailand the most, when it was cheap and safe(r).
- While in Osaka I learned a lot about japanese culture, got into pastel chalks, charcoal and ink sketching and really dove into acrylic painting, er not the paint cans,ok? I was also big on weightlifting, cycling and long distance walking. Oh yes, my kid brother, Fred and I started a comedy troupe so he could hone his stand up skills for NYC. It was a lot of work; but, we had a great bunch of people to work with.
- I started singing again, by joining the SHOUT choir of the Lighthouse (street) Church not far from my house. In '98 I moved to Vancouver, BC; but, there were few jobs. I got sick. As I healed I got involved with Outlook TV as a gaffer, sound crew and even as a tv reporter. In '02 I moved back to Grand Lake, NS because my deaf, elderly parents just couldn't run their own home anymore.
- Dad died at home in October ,07. Near the end he was pretty much helpless and needed a lot of help. Since then, I've grown healthier, bear leukemia and now am involved in lay ministry with the local Anglican church. In fact I'm the cantor at the same little, village church (St. Margaret's) that I used to attend as a kid. Now I'm looking forward to getting fit and getting a good job. - I taught French at Queenie from 1974 to 1976. I married Mr. Peter Clare in August 1977. He taught at Q.E.H.S. from 1973-76. We have two wonderful children. What a great discovery this whole website has been to us, allowing to find out about so many of you!
- We visit the Troys in Maine quite regularly. Both of us have taught it seems forever. I am presently teaching Personal Life Management in a Barrie High School. Lucky Mr. Clare is retired but has never really stopped teaching, accepting Long-Term Occasional contracts that take him to the classroom 95 days a year. We would love to hear from you. - Great website. I often log on to get all the news. I've been retired here in NS since 1984. It's great to be near our family although I can't persuade any of them to update their bios. Keep up the good work Steve.
