This section is dedicated to all of the small beasties from the phylum Arthropoda. Mostly I am interested in insects, but I have also photographed many spiders and I didn't want to have a separate section for them. Maybe later, when I've scanned in more spider photos, I'll split them into a separate gallery. |

Most people seem to think of insects as nuisances. Some do make pests of themselves, but they don't do it intentionally. Except for a few nuisance creatures like mosquitos, black flies, and earwigs, I really like having insects around. They're very diverse, and they're a lot of fun to watch. |

Most of the time we don't even notice them. If you walk through a field you may only notice an occasional grasshopper or butterfly. But if you stop for a minute in one place, and really pay close attention, you may find that there is activity all around you. At the right time of year, in a sunny field full of weeds and wildflowers, everything will be moving with life! Ants and ladybugs crawling on plants, flies of many descriptions, bees collecting pollen, butterflies feeding at wildflowers, and maybe an occasional praying mantis being very, very still. It's like a whole different world. All of these creatures are living their own lives and don't care a whit about what humanity is up to. Many of the insects won't even notice you. There is something reassuring in that. I love these beasts. |
