Montréal Fire Department

The Montreal Fire Department is Canada's biggest and oldest paid fire department. It was established 01 May 1863 by absorbing the city's volunteer brigades. Its growth reflected that of city, moving out to the city limits, and latter through annexations of neighbouring towns. Alexander Bertrum was the department's first fire chief, and oversaw the change from a volunteer structure to a professional organization.
