"Canadian Black Metal? Be sure
to add Frozen Shadows to your list of "bands to pursue". This
trio is a pair of brass knuckles held in Satan's clenched fists. They
have an uncanny ability to bring Burzum or Darkthrone to mind without
actually sounding like either one. Partially due to Myrkhaal's vocalized
torture of his mind and soul and the weird ringing tone lingering on
the tail end of the guitar's distortion. Some of this guy's screams
sound like he's literally coming apart at the seams. The disc opens
with a good mix of intense hostility and more moody, etheral breaks
like the title track, which gives the listener time to digest and savor
the music. This exercise in diverse structure and intensity was warmly
welcomed by these ears. From track three on, prepare to be mangled with
a hateful, full-on black metal attack. The dense, echoing productions
intensifies the already morbid mood; whether the drummer sprints to
rip roaring speed or the synth slows everything down to a shadowy myriad
of grim decay. If I had to nail it down in the end for Frozen Shadows,
their greatest strenght lies in the fact they have the same key elements
the legendary groups emanate in their music. It isn't how fast you keep
your tempo or how low you tune, it's how natural you sound while projecting
your intent and feeling. Frozen Shadows are 100% naturally evil, vile
and dominating. If that sounds good to you, go buy this disk and call
an exorcist. You'll need it!"
PIT MAGAZINE, USA
"There is not inner or outer peace within
the pact signed by the members of Frozen Shadows. The only salvation
for them is the practice of Satanic Art. The follow up to the "Empires
de Glace" demo shows a symphonic and nostalgic Black Metal anthology,
a crowning achievement of Darkness and elegant atmospheres. Dedicated
to their land, their identity and the one of their ancestors, the poetic
lyrics written by Myrkhaal sound as an infinite night, as if there should
never be a day. The dazzling "Dans les Bras des Immortels"
is a passionnate and frenetic release, where the call from the dark
changes into an hymn to darkness, invoqued by a lone shout: "In
the fabric of Darkness an empire is weaving itself". 5/6
METALLIAN, France
"Those of you who have read my 2nd issue
might remember the review I did of Frozen Shadows' demo, and you will
clearly remember that I really liked their demo. This time we can enjoy
their music on CD format with their debut full lenght album, not much
has changed really except that the songs are twice or thrice as good
as they were on the demo! We're still talking about grim and cold Black
Metal performed in an excellent way like most bands of the late 90's
don't manage to do... Frozen Shadows is a superior band, there's no
wondering about that. The production on this CD is good, could be a
little darker and more powerful at times, but as a debut CD and debut
release of this new label I should think we have got more than what
we can ask for..."
OSKOREI, Norway
"Canada will never be know for its output
of Black Metal, but there is an up and coming crop of bands that could
garner well deserved international attention. Québec's Frozen
Shadows are one of these bands, palying devastatingly brutal music which
any serious black metal fan should experience first hand. Starting off
with a cool intro that prepares the listener for the upcoming mayhem,
the music hits you like a punch to the face- the riffing, oh so very
cold, the vokills straight out of hell and drumming which at peak speed
rival any in the genre. It took me by surprise how talented this band
is: their craft played with a delicate touch along with attention to
detail rarely seen in a band this young. Keyboards are used only to
enhance the atmospheres they create, which I fully appreciate. Don't
mistake Frozen Shadows for a band that mindlessly bash it out, they
slow down often to create some grim and mesmerising moments to behold.
Fans of take-no-prisoners black metal such as Marduk and Setherial should
seriously give this a listen, as Frozen Shadows offer both brutality
and intelligence in their black art. If these guys aren't signed sometime
this year, it would be an offence greater than anything Varg has ever
done!"
UNRESTRAINED, Canada
"If this album had been released a few years
ago, it would today be a total classic, and even now it is impressing
enough to beat most stupid newcomers against the next wall and smash
them to pieces. With an armament of raw and infernal sound (reminding
early Emperor and Satyricon), this band plays Black Metal as it was
meant to be: hellishly extreme, while always adding a dimension of beauty
to the destruction and nihilism the music breathes. The speed is that
we all knew and loved on Immortal's Pure Holocaust, the guitars sound
like frozen to ice, the vocals appear like reaching the ear from valleys
deep below in the wind, and the keyboard draws pictures of majestic
mountains and grim landscapes in the mist. A Black Metal Holocaust as
everyone who is truly into black metal will enjoy - and even I, who
today refrains from this stupid scene, enjoy it to a high extent."
MOONDANCE, Germany
"This is really how black metal should be
played. Cold and merciless, amorced with a mystic intro and this mood
of cold, and then, an eruption of icecold guitar riffs, desperately
screaming vokills from beyond, like a tormented one inside an abyss
of ice. With this album, you will know exactly what it is to feel pain,
anger, desolation, despair, perdition, misanthropy. These keyboards
used as a background are awaking inside you this shiver all around your
spine, this sensation like you will be in the next five minute sentenced
to death , still seeing the guillotine in a freezing winter. Just listen
to such mighty songs as "Dans les Bras des Immortels" or "Au
Seuil des Ténèbres" or the incredibly monumental
"Lunes Funèbres" and I feel sure you will understand
what I mean. This is nowadays one of the few black metal albums that
can bring you such extreme feelings of sadness, wrath and anger. This
is simply a milestone in the genre!" 6666/666
DEVIL'S ELIXIR, Belgium
"If you want to talk about a mighty future,
look no further that Canada's own Frozen Shadows. Hailing from the cold
depths of Montreal, their debut Cd Dans les Bras des Immortels is the
finest display of real, black-hearted, state of the art Black Metal
to ever hail from these north american shores. A raw, primitive, stripped
down assault that bludgeons without mercy, Frozen Shadows portray an
atmosphere so cold and merciless, Battles in the North looks like a
warm and cozy cuddle by the fireplace in comparison. Sure it's a bold
statement, but Frozen Shadows embraces the true conviction of Black
Metal. look for them to herald this extreme and underground North American
Black Metal assault in full force" 8,5/10
BRAVE WORDS AND BLOODY KNUCKLES,

"Do you want to know the meaning of grim
and fast Black Metal? Here's your opportunity!!! At this point and after
billions of new bands entering the obscure scene all of you know what
Black Metal is all about, but perhaps you haven't heard enough quality
bands... Frozen Shadows return after their succesful demo "Empires
de Glace" and in here you get the continuation of their work, still
fast, still obscure, still professional, still cold. It's weird to see
bands looking for huge productions while others like this Canadian band
continue to sound so raw, primitive and cruel... but Black Metal is
all about emotions and this debut accomplishes that very well. "Dans
les Bras des Immortels" lasts about 50 minutes, so all black souls:
this deserves your money!!!" 4/5
ANCIENT CEREMONIES, Portugal
"I'd like to hear Black Metal like this
more often! Black Metal is an art, and that art flows in the veins of
Frozen Shadows' members, no doubt about it! We are treated here with
a very classy outfit, both for their musical quality as well as the
sheer darkness and majestic atmospheres they project. Here you will
find the true meaning of darkness. Those Quebecers are not only one
of the best bands around, but also Masters of the Black Metal Art. You
are urged to listen to this..."
PARANOY'HARD, France
"I still don't think the demo was all that
impressive (despite what just everyone says), but I'll freely admit
that this CD is brilliant. Hateful, incredibly fast, a fitting production,
and uniquely capable of producing each and every single emotion I want
to feel while listening to Black Metal- it has it all! The line-up changes
were surely an excellent choice, as the Cd is a mass improvement over
the demo. And the production! Flawless! It has a rather exceptionnal
drum and guitar sound, and the vocals/keyboards are placed perfectly
within the mix. The vocals, just like in the demo, are of major importance
here: they make a person clench their fist with hate! Frozen Shadows
clearly play in the style of Emperor- but in a more evolved sense. I
was never a fan of anything Emperor did after the MLP, and generally
do not appreciate bands who play in a similar way, but "Dans les
Bras des immortels" improves on the style without a doubt. It's
faster, tighter, angrier and obviously more interesting that their colleagues.
And most importantly, no classical or pointless atmospheric fluff here-
the Cd rampages for it's fifty-minute running time! Exceptionnal!"
LARM, Canada
"Excellent (well-played and well recorded)
Scandinavian influenced Black Metal by the corpsepainted trio from Canada
(Montréal, Québec), as cold and grim as the best from
the Nordic scene! Well know in the extreme underground for their classic
demo, Frozen Shadows present dark, raging and atmospheric Black Metal
for fans craving the "True" and "Elite" attacks!
Very Impressive, so (definitely) do NOT pass up this cult essential!"
BLACKMETAL.COM, USA
"Bombastic and grim black metal from Canada.
There are keys but they are used for background atmosphere and do not
mess with the overall structure of the songs. Frozen Shadows go generally
at one speed and that is lightning quick. I love the cryptic and brutal
feel of the music as it suffocates you in darkness. Fans of old True
Black Metal of the early 90's tradition this is a must!"
CANADIAN ASSAULT, USA
"Frozen Shadows will not disappoint diehard
fanatics of the coldest and most raw Black Metal. After a good demo
they return with a very good album that contains 7 songs of real Black
metal the Nordic way. In the demo review I said it was pretty much like
Setherial and Emperor, I think they sound much more personnal now. They
still use the synth in a blood freezing way, the speed is incredible
and the screamy voice fits perfectly this kind of music. Some slow parts
are also included, and I cannot say in any way that this album is boring.
It's up to the maniacs out there to buy this!" 4/5
APOSTASIA, Sweden
"What if the best way to innovate in terms
of Black Metal was to get back to it's roots? Fans of traditionnal Black
Metal where pure hatred goes alongside freezing melodies will not be
disapointed by this first album from our faraway cousins from Québec,
Frozen Shadows. The keyboards here are perfectly integrated (a rare
thing these days) and miles away from the pompous and joyful kind we
are usually treated to. If anything, they even add an evil touch to
the agressive riffs and fast tempo. Also worthy of mention are the songs
in french, showing that they haven't forgotten their roots. In short:
good Black Metal like very few still do, do not miss this!"
THE LOST REALM, France
"One of Québec's oldest Black Metal
groups is back with their first CD "Dans les Bras des Immortels"
after the '96 "Empires de Glace" demo. I wasn't expecting
much since most North Americans seem incapable of truly understanding
Black Metal. To my great surprise, Frozen Shadows excel in an intense
breed of Black Metal, and are able to go head to head with any Norwegian
or Polish outfit! I also like their nationalistic side and the pride
they have in their roots. A Québec flag is present in the booklet
and 3 of the 7 songs are in french! The visual and sound production
is excellent, and the artwork of Guy England (ex-Tenebrae) is simply
amazing. Frozen Shadows' music is greatly influenced by the middle 90's
Black Metal. Some parts bring to mind albums such as "In the Nightside
Eclipse", "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas" or "The Shadowthrone".
The keyboards are used to accentuate the dark and mystic passages. Without
a doubt the best Black Metal album ever released here."
SANG FRAIS, Québec
"This was probably the most extreme Black
Metal release of 1999. Totally hateful Black Metal, played fast but
with variation, tortured sick vocals and fuzzy cold guitar sound. This
pretty much has all the elements of what extreme Black Metal is supposed
to sound like. Also the packaging is very tasteful, the artwork is very
grim. Easily the best Black Metal band from Canada."
SOLOMON'S GATE, USA
"Very consuming and hellishly raw Black
Metal, with no compromise on hate, loathing and corpsepaint from this
canadian horde. From french speaking Québec, this band is another
indication of the spawning underground Black Metal from the Frozen North.
Expect to be blown away by their raging infernal hymns!"
